Hong Kong Octopus Card

Hong Kong - Getting Around

For anyone using Hong Kong public transportation on a daily basis, the Octopus card quickly becomes a new best friend.  This cash card is on the frontier of advancements in transportation systems, as it contains a built-in microchip that manages fares electronically simply by holding the card over processors at ticket gates and bus entrances.

Almost all forms of Hong Kong transportation, as well as public payphones, vending machines, photo booths, grocery stores, convenience stores, and fast-food restaurants, accept the card.

Usually an Octopus card will have no personal information and holders of the cards add money as needed by using public machines or over the counter at convenience stores.

A disadvantage of this set up is that there is no way of retrieving a lost card.  A second option is to have a personalized Octopus card, so if lost, the card can be returned to its rightful owner.  Personalized cards can also be linked with personal bank accounts so funds will be automatically transferred when the balance falls to a specified value.

An Octopus card can be purchased for HK $50 at metro stations and returned for a HK $50 refund after three months of use, or for HK $43 if returned within the three-month period.  Many tourists choose not to return their Octopus card, but keep it as a souvenir from one of the world’s most advanced transportation systems.

Octopus Cards can be used wherever you find a readerThe public transport system is modern and well organized.  Complete with the MTRC, buses, minibuses, ferries, taxis, and trams, there are several options for reaching any destination in a timely manner.
