Outlying Islands

Living

Of the outlying islands, only two places are popular among expats, those being Discovery Bay and Tung Chung.  Discovery Bay is located on the northeast coast of Lantau Island and is very densely populated.  The area has a variety of low-and high-rise houses.

Facilities include shops, restaurants, a private beach, a golf club, four clubhouses, and a marina.  Despite its secluded location, transportation is made convenient by the 24-hour, high-speed ferry to Hong Kong Island.

Tung Chung is a fairly new development, with projects beginning just a few decades ago.  Like Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay, it is a choice location for anyone who loves the outdoors as the surrounding hills offer numerous recreational opportunities.

Accommodations consist mainly of private developments and are in the mid-to-high end range of the real estate market.

Other inhabited islands include Peng Chau, Cheung Chau, and various smaller islands.  These are usually only visited by foreigners when they get a wild hair for exploring someplace new.

Going back and forth to Hong Kong city is more of a hassle, so the general population is made up of locals who rarely find the need to leave the islands.
