Social Norms

Hong Kong - The Culture

Understanding creates opportunity.  It was true for the astronauts of Apollo 11, and it is true for a foreigner traveling to a new land.  Maybe the end result will not be as sensational as walking on the moon, but understanding a people can create invaluable experiences that would not be had otherwise, especially in a place so rich in culture and tradition as Hong Kong.

Unfortunately, many miss out on the real Hong Kong life experience – the festivities, the rituals, the cuisine, the early morning tai chi, etc. – and choose to remain within the comforts of a Hong Kong expat lifestyle.  After all, with the thousands of foreigners in an environment that caters to their needs, it is easy to do.  Whether or not activities are joined or friendships are formed, it is worth taking the time to learn about Hong Kong’s people and their culture; and who knows, maybe opportunities will arise, be it making new friends, taking an active role in the community, or embarking on a cross-cultural business venture.

Hong Kong welcomes people from around the world; indeed, this influences local Hong Kong life, especially in regards to pop culture, media, and fashion.  Yet, there is still a stronghold on traditional values and practices.  This blend of new age with tradition creates a unique array of social norms.  Learn more about these norms as listed below:
